Further, IT revolution and developments in computer technology has vastly changed the scenario and made modern systems more and more sophisticated, complex and powerful. Reliability of modern products and systems has a major impact on the profitability of industry and cost effectiveness of essential services. Defense and high investment sectors have national security and high monetary risk at stake. The increasingly prohibitive cost of support systems and low operational availability have stimulated rapid changes in design to improve maintainability.


With the advent of 21st century, industrial products not only need to have high performance but also have minimum material and energy requirement to conform to clean production and to be sustainable in order to conserve scarce resources and minimize environment pollution. Indiscriminate industrial and development activities of past several decades have severely damaged the environment and disturbed the ecology of several parts of the world beyond recovery. Therefore all product development projects must be subjected to environmental impact assessment, besides ensuring its high reliability and safety, if societal obligations have to be honoured and the future generations have to survive in an eco-friendly environment. This puts high demands on products/ systems design


In order to meet the new challenges of the 21st Century, the practicing engineers must be trained to handle these problems. Unfortunately as of today, not all educations institutions provide that information in their curricula. Therefore, it becomes necessary to make practicing engineers fully conscious about implications of these important emerging topics by conducting in-house training programmes.
